You Were in a Car Accident in Your Garage. Now What?

Having a garage car accident is more common than you think. Mornings on the way to work are particularly treacherous, as folks who are still half asleep get into the car and hit the gas, backing right into their closed garage doors. The crash and crunch of your vehicle’s rear end against wood and metal is an unpleasant way to start your day.
Hitting other vehicles is another common culprit in garage accidents. Many people have reported sliding right into their other car when attempting to make squeeze into their garage.

These are the steps you can take to sort out the issue quickly and efficiently:

Assess the Damage to Your Vehicle

First, check your car for damage. Are there scratches, dents or shattered lights in need of repair? Damage to your vehicle will be covered under two conditions. First, you must have an automobile insurance policy with collision coverage. Second, the damage must exceed the amount of your deductible. If you expect to pay less than the amount of your deductible to repair scratches and dents, you may wish to handle the transaction directly with your body shop.

Assess the Damage to Your Garage Door

Carefully inspect your garage door to determine whether repairs are necessary. If it is stuck partially or completely open, you can gently try to close it. However, you should not force it. Call your garage door repair company right away to correct this issue, as it could be a security concern.
Damage to your garage door is probably not covered by your automobile insurance. However, it may be covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy, depending on your level of coverage. Some policies will not cover damage caused by negligence, so your agent may ask you specific questions about how the accident occurred.
Dents or scrapes on your garage door are less urgent, but it is wise to have your garage door repair person take a look as soon as you can. This sort of damage can lead to unsafe operation of your garage door over time.

Your deductible will apply in this situation, so you may wish to speak with your repair person first for an estimate. Repairs that fall under the amount of your deductible are best handled directly.

13 garage organization ideas

At Austin Garage Door Solutions, we see garages in all sorts of conditions, from sparkling clean to cluttered and disorganized. If you have the spring (or summer) cleaning bug, here are some garage organization ideas to declutter, improve efficiency, and make your garage look great!

1. Prioritize your stuff.

The first step in decluttering and organizing your garage is sorting out the type of stuff you have in your garage. Begin by creating piles of different garage items, and placing them together.
Sort everything in your garage, including:

Home maintenance

Tools

Holiday decorations

Extra storage

Gardening

Sports/athletic equipment

Then, prioritize where would be best to place everything, based on how often you use it. If you feel that your garage is particularly cluttered, be ready to pare down a few of your items by either donating or throwing out some of the clutter that you don’t use.

2. Make accessibility key for children’s items.

Keep sports gear, kids’ bikes, and frequently used items by your kids near the entrance of your garage. This allows for children to reach their play things easily without them having to navigate through your whole garage. Keeping the hockey net in the back of the garage may make some sense given its size, but when your child tries to carry it between two cars to get it into the driveway, it’s hard to avoid a scratch on the side of your car.

3. Hang your tools on pegboards.

Pegboard is a cost-effective way of displaying your tools, gardening equipment, and other items readily. Pegboards are a garage standard, and rightfully so, as it can be easily changed around to add or remove space, and are key to organizing your home tools.

4. Keep your holiday decorations out of reach.

Your garage storage should have a hierarchy of usefulness. You’ll want an easily accessible place to keep the weed killer so you can stay on top of those cracks in your sidewalk. On the other hand, your holiday decorations are only used once a year, for a set period of time. These can be put away in a less accessible storage area than your more frequently used items.

5. Don’t store food, cardboard, or paint in your garage.

Critters love cardboard. And in the Texas heat, food and paint will not last a summer. Keep these items in your closet, or pantry to prevent heat or unwanted animal guests from damaging them.

6. Donate anything you don’t/won’t use.

Garages should not be a place where your most sentimental items are kept, so you can allow yourself to donate the baseball tee your son and daughter used when they played tee ball six years ago; or that impulse tennis racket you got after watching a particularly exciting Wimbledon tournament.

7. Keep your bike out of sight.

Bicycle thieves thrive in Austin, and with good reason. Don’t let a potential burglar see your bicycle. Hang it up obscured from the view of any windows into your garage. This provides the double benefit of saving you room, and keeping your bike safe from theft.

8. Be practical about where you’re putting everything.

Can your store your not often used kayak on the ceiling? Probably. But how hard and heavy is it to get it up there? So much that you’re not going to want to get it down? As much room as it might save, it isn’t helpful in the long run.

9. Buy all your storage boxes at once, and buy quite a few extra.

As the years in your home go on, no matter how much you throw out, you’ll still find yourself with more and more items in your garage. Five years from now, when you need a place to store your newfound birdhouse collection, it may be difficult to find the storage box you bought today. Buy sturdy, bug resistant plastic containers, and make sure to buy extras for the years to come so your storage will be future-proof.

10. Label everything in boxes.

You don’t want to spend hours looking through your storage boxes without knowing which box holds what. Get a piece of paper and tape it to your box. Keep a pen nearby to cross off and add any items that will eventually go into your garage storage. It will save you time and energy with searching for things.

11. Give your interior walls and floor a paint job.

Painting concrete floors can prevent mold, and make it easier for you to clean. Keeping the walls painted as well can add a layer of warmth and comfort to an otherwise bland space.

12. Get ceiling storage.

Hanging items from your ceiling is a cost-effective way of maximizing the space in your garage. Keeping your unused items (i.e. holiday decorations) on the ceiling will save you space, time and resources.

13. Always have a clear surface to work on.

When you have a home project that needs worked on, make sure you have a tool bench, or designated space clear at all times to make sure you can conveniently and efficiently work through your project.

Follow these tips and your garage organization will greatly improve, giving you a great space to work, play and live in.

Simple and Effective Ways to Increase Your Garage Door Security

Garage doors can be a weak spot in your home security, so make sure not to neglect the security of your garage door. Burglaries are infamously difficult for the police to solve, so when it comes to your house, the best defense is being prepared. At Austin Garage Door Solutions, we’ve created a list to help you strengthen your garage door security.

Consider an automatic closer

There are many ways you can close your garage door automatically when you leave your home. Some applications can sync with your phone to close your door automatically when you get too far away from your house. This automatic motion can work wonders if you find yourself forgetting to keep your garage door closed often.

Lock your doors

Always lock the door from your garage into your house. Add a deadbolt for added security. Even if a burglar can get into your garage, don’t make it easy for them to get into the rest of your house.

Ditch the garage door opener

Never keep the garage door opener in your car. Keep it on your keys. If your car gets broken into, you leave your whole home susceptible to break-ins if a thief takes your garage door opener as well. The best alternative would be to replace your car garage door opener with a small opener to keep on your key ring.

Add a deadbolt to your garage door

This is a must for vacations. If you’re leaving your garage closed for extended periods of time, (like for frequent vacations or business ventures) add a deadbolt to your garage door. You don’t need to lock your garage every time you go out, but when you’re leaving for your summer vacation, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Cover any windows into your garage

Keep views into your garage to a minimum. Add curtains to any garage windows, or privacy screens. The less a potential burglar can scope out the layout of a place, the less likely they are to try to get in.

Inspect garage doors often.

Regularly look at the structure of your garage door to make sure it’s in good order. Check to make sure the locking mechanism works on your garage door, and make sure you keep any keys for that on you at all times.
Check the tracks and wheels of your garage door system at least twice a year to ensure everything is working properly. If you suspect anything, contact a garage repair technician.

Keep your garage door closed.

It’s the easiest thing to do, and yet some people can’t seem to remember. Leaving garage doors open, even once, can have your house marked as an easy target for burglars.

Still have questions about garage door security?

Contact the repair team at Austin Garage Door Solutions if you live in the greater Austin area. Our team is dedicated to helping you get the most out of your garage.

Quick Guide to Wooden Garage Door Maintenance

If you choose to have traditional wooden garage doors, you take on the responsibility of maintenance. Your garage doors will be under a constant barrage of rain and other severe weather. Here are some tips on how to keep wooden garage doors maintained.

Painting

Before painting the wood, make sure the wood is stripped of any existing paint. Use the garage door manufacturer’s preferred method of removing paint. Some chemical paint removers may not work well with your wood, so double check with the manufacturer.

When the paint is stripped, you will want to fill in any indentations or gaps in the wood. This can be accomplished through caulking. Make sure to use a paintable caulk to get a smooth and flush hardboard for your panels.

After this, use a weatherproof paint on the wood door panel. Weatherproofing the doors will help prevent moisture from seeping in.

Staining

Staining the garage door is another option. A weatherproof stain can add vivid colors to the wood while also keeping your door safe from the onslaught of severe weather.

If you want to stain the wood, make sure the stain is stirred thoroughly for an even color. Stain the doors carefully to make sure there is even weatherproofing on the entire door.

Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is a small piece of moveable material, be it PVC or otherwise, that can block rain, moisture, and other adverse weather conditions from entering the garage. It essentially plugs up any open spaces for a garage without hindering garage door movement.

Weatherstripping is an excellent way to winterize your garage and prevent more damage from happening to your doors. You can measure, cut, and install the strip on the top and sides of the garage door frame. For additional fortification, caulk the edges of the weatherstripping.

Garage door seal

A garage door seal is a piece of vinyl or rubber that goes on the bottom of the garage doors. When the garage doors close, the material seals the gap, preventing moisture, dirt, and more from getting inside.

Weatherstripping is very similar to a garage door seal. However, instead of going over the garage door, the seal goes under. You can also attach the seal directly to the garage door.

For further security, you can attach a seal to the doors and on the seam where the garage stops and the driveway begins. A possible downside to attaching a seal to the bottom of the garage will be getting water out. If water has already gotten into the space, it will not have the ability to flow out into the driveway. The seals will keep water out instead of letting it get in.

Personal Injury

Broken garage doors don’t respond to garage door openers, which requires them to be manually operated. However, if there are problems with manual operation, you put your body at risk of injury every time you open and close your door.

A door that won’t automatically open and has trouble staying on the tracks can only fall backwards into the home since the door is larger than the frame. It will fall toward anyone or anything behind the door with over 500 pounds of force.

Placing unneeded tension on a worn torsion spring, especially when operating a garage door manually, causes undue stress on the spring. When you try to force the garage door to open without the aid of the spring’s tension, it can snap, causing severe injury.

When repair is not an option in these scenarios, opt for garage door replacement.

Theft

Uncontrollable garage doors can also leave avenues for potential thieves to enter your home. Intruders can use manual operation of the garage door to gain entrance to the inside of your home or to take valuables that are stored in the garage.

Prevent theft in an emergency scenario by opting to replace your garage door. If your garage door can’t be repaired, you’ll leave yourself open to theft for longer as you wait for a new overhead door to be installed.

Aesthetic Garage Door Replacement

The 2014 Cost vs. Value Report found that garage door replacement to enhance curb appeal touted an astounding 86% return on investment. Replacing your garage door can help you raise the value of your home at little cost.

Old garage doors, especially wooden ones, can be brought back to life with a simple paint job. Don’t replace a working garage door that can be revived with paint.

However, old wooden doors that don’t function well can be replaced with steel doors for a significant profit. Steel doors are cheaper to manufacture and more common than wooden doors. You can forego repairs on your wooden garage door and raise your home’s value with a brand new steel overhead door.

1. Remote Works, Wall Switch Doesn’t

It may be time for a new wall switch. Power surges can fry the electronics inside of wall switches. Ask yourself – have you recently gone through some inclement weather or the neighborhood transformer blew? It’s likely that your opener got overloaded and couldn’t handle the current.
Older wall switches just use two wires to complete a circuit that opens your door. Newer ones have locks and lights designed to work with your specific garage door. If your door is newer, you’ll need a replacement wall switch.

2. Wall Switch Works, Remote Doesn’t

It could be as simple as a bad battery or as complicated as a broken remote. Move your remote closer to the opener to eliminate the possibility of range issues. Also, check the antenna to see if it’s pointing down the way it should.

If the wall switch is working, the disconnect isn’t in the wall – but it might be in the opener. Make sure your remote has good batteries. If there’s any doubt that your batteries may not have juice, put in a fresh set. If your remote still doesn’t work, your technician can determine whether the receiver inside the opener is malfunctioning or if your remote has just had enough.

3. Neither the Remote Nor the Wall Switch Work

If your door is powered but not going anywhere no matter how you try to open it, your circuit board may need replacement. Circuit boards are often the victims of power surges. Just a moment of overload can render the electronics on your circuit board useless. If you can, keep your opener on a surge protected outlet.

4. Opener Makes a Grinding Sound

The main drive gear has probably seen its final days. As one of the most crucial parts of the garage door opener’s process, it is constantly at work. Drive gears are usually plastic and function together with the worm gear. They take heavy strain every time you open and close your garage door.

Once you hear the grinding, don’t try to force the door to open. Without the main drive gear taking on its workload, the other parts inside your opener become vulnerable. Contact a technician as soon as the grinding begins.

5. Carriage Moves, But the Door Doesn’t

Your trolley is most likely broken. The parts that move on the rails of your garage door carriage assembly work with precision. If the trolley loses even a little bit of its original shape, that precision is compromised. The best bet is to replace the trolley to correct any imbalance.

6. Garage Door is Open, But Motor Keeps Running

Your garage door’s limit switch may need some adjustment. The limit switch works in tune with your garage door opener to signal when the machinery and electronics can stop working. Daily use will slowly knock your limit switch out of alignment. Periodic adjustments are necessary to prevent your garage door from working harder than it needs to.

6 Safety Tips For Your Garage Door

In April 2013, a three year old girl living with her family in Waldorf, Maryland fell victim to a closing garage door and, unfortunately, was unable to be revived. Though it is believed that the family’s garage door was working properly, their garage door opener was within the child’s reach, and accidents are always possible.

The gravity of this situation brings to light the importance of home safety, and the garage door cannot be overlooked.

Here are some great ways to help you stay on top of garage door safety:

1. Read the Owner’s Manual

Reading about your garage door is the best and most thorough step you can take to make sure everyone’s safe. The owner’s manual is built as a reference should you need guidance using your door. Giving it a read-through will help you understand all of its functions and the way that the door is intended to work for you.

The owner’s manual includes useful information such as a complete layout of the garage door parts, their purpose, how to inspect and maintain your garage door, and often includes a list of replacement parts. It can also guide you through various problems you may encounter throughout the life of the door.

2. Learn About the Emergency Release

The emergency release handle will disconnect the garage door from its opener. This can be used in emergencies to allow human power to lift and move the door. It is an emergency-only function and should not be used for any other reason.

Your owner’s manual should have full information on the emergency release handle, including how to operate it, what it does, and how to reconnect your garage door to the opener. Stay educated on how the entire process works and consistently re-read so you are always ready in the event of an emergency.

3. Stay Away From Moving Doors

A moving garage door is dangerous whether it’s moving up or down. Clothing and fingers can get caught in the track and cause bodily injury. A door that isn’t properly maintained can fall off of its railing and jeopardize your safety. A closing door can crush objects underneath it. The dangers are rare but serious. The best course of action is to stay clear of a moving garage door. If your garage door opens manually, make sure that it’s easy to open. Opening any garage door should never be difficult.

Some doors have a reverse mechanism. It is a safety mechanism that will reverse the action of the garage door if it detects an object in its path. You can test this action with a soft, malleable object like that has resistance such as a couch cushion or roll of paper towels. The garage door should reverse once it makes contact with your test object.

4. Keep Children Away

You should never allow children to operate your door under any circumstances. All garage doors are heavy pieces of equipment that weigh in excess of 200 pounds. They also have extra mechanical and electrical parts. The door cannot be treated as a toy. Proper operation of the door requires careful attention and forethought, so it’s always best to keep kids away.

Consider keeping the opener away from children. Many automatic doors have both a remote and a wall-mounted button, both of which can be either installed or stored away from curious kids. Keep them away from doors without exception. Moving doors, open doors, closed doors, and broken doors are all extremely dangerous and should not be used for play.

The best way to keep kids safe is to properly teach them about the door and why it is dangerous. Safety education is a powerful tool for kids and adults alike, so don’t neglect your responsibility to teach your children about garage door safety.

5. Inspect the Door As Often As Possible

Do a proper inspection on a monthly basis. Check all of the garage door’s parts. Look for damaged metal, blockages, and unusual alignment. Make sure all objects and children are clear of the door, then open and close it to make sure that it’s operating the way it should. Small errors are easy to miss when using your garage door on a daily basis.

Even if you’re just on your way into your car, take a moment and watch your garage door as it opens. If its movement is shaky or seems misaligned, it won’t hurt to inspect further in case you need to repair your garage door.

6. Do Not Repair Broken Springs Yourself

Broken garage door springs are one of the top reasons garage doors won’t open. The springs on your garage door use tension to hold the heavy weight of the door and help it move with ease. Broken springs can store extraordinary amounts of tension and, if they are not handled with the proper tools, can cause damage to your door and severe injury to you and your loved ones.

Weatherproof Your Garage Door

Think about where you live. Here in Austin, it’s sunny, dry, and blisteringly hot for most of the year. We don’t have to deal with storms very often. Also, snow is so rare that most people don’t even consider it when building and maintaining homes. The most dangerous element is the sun’s rays, and they can crack and warp any paint from car paint jobs to wooden siding.

Some regions, however, are plagued with incessant rain and excessive moisture. Wet weather can cause a lot of problems for garage doors and their paint. Some paints trap moisture and cause damage not only to the paint job but also to the structure of the building. Snow can also strip away color and weather rough edges.

What Paint Should You Use?

Select an exterior paint that can handle the weather in your area, especially if you want your garage door painted the same way for a long time. Exterior paint is usually oil or water based, and water based paint is either acrylic or latex. Primer, the coat of paint used to prepare your surface for painting, can also either be oil or water based.

Oil based primers and paints are hazardous to the environment and are being phased out for exterior use. While they perform well in dry, hot environments, you may want to consider a water based latex paint made for siding.

Latex paint spreads easily on steel garage doors, stands up well to extreme weather, and can be customized by the manufacturers to fit the needs of different climates. It also retains color very well, and in hot climates where the sun easily fades paint, color strength is vital.

For wooden garage doors, think about taking advantage of wood’s natural defenses against the elements and opt instead for a good finish.

You can retain the beauty of the wood and simplify maintenance by removing the finish or paint on the wood currently and refinishing with a few coats of a quality wood finish. While a finish can also fade, refinishing can revive the look of an ailing finish and provide a mild change of color.

If you’re looking to paint your wooden door, try a water-based latex paint made for porches. Porch paint can take a heavy beating from Mother Earth and can keep your garage door protected for a long, long time.

While it may seem like a lot of work, painting your garage door is essential to keeping all of the parts of your home squeaky clean. No matter what kind of garage door you have, there’s a way to restore it to its original beauty or even improve upon it.

Most things that squeak are annoying, sneakers on linoleum floors, a kitchen cabinet with dry hinges and, of course, squeaky garage doors.

What’s even worse is that when they squeak and squeal when you are leaving your house, you might make a mental note to look into that. However, by the time you’ve gotten to work or picked up the kids, it will have drifted away into the dark recesses of your mind. However, it is still back there, causing you worry. If you live in a neighborhood with a Homeowner’s Association, you could be under a ‘noise restriction’ covenant, which means the neighborhood could fine you for creating a disturbing noise.

However, if your door uses torsion springs mounted on a header on top of the door, do not attempt to replace the bottom bracket rollers without professional assistance. These brackets are subject to constant spring tension and could potentially cause serious bodily injury if you unbolt them without assistance.

While worn hinges are more uncommon than worn rollers, damaged hinges can make a lot more noise. These rollers can cause the garage door to bind and wear the door section’s tongue-and-groove joints. A small amount of slack at a hinge is normal, but if you find strange holes where the hinge bracket connects with the hinge pin, consider replacing the entire hinge immediately.
Be sure to lubricate any moving parts on a garage door every six months to keep the door and its assembly from squeaking and to reduce wear. Also, avoid any non-garage door specific lubricants.
